BuckingJam Palace Presents

Oscar Peterson: Family Album

We are pleased to announce the first official Oscar Peterson Centennial kick-off event, presented by BuckingJam Palace (BJP), in collaboration with The Estate of Oscar Peterson

Presented in the intimate setting of BuckingJam Palace, a historic 1910 home in the heart of Calgary, Oscar Peterson: Family Album will be a moving and deeply personal exploration of the power of music and the creativity, resilience, and determination of a young Black Canadian who grew up in working-class Montréal and maintained his humour and humility as he rose to prominence on the global stage. This three-night series offers the unique opportunity to enjoy words and music from some of Canada’s most celebrated storytellers, JUNO Award-winning musicians Robi Botos on piano, Mike Downes on bass, and Jim Doxas on drums, as well as Peterson’s youngest daughter, Céline Peterson, who will join the conversation alongside host and BJP Artistic Director, Lisa Buck.

Under the musical direction of Jim Doxas, the curated musical selections will primarily consist of Peterson’s own compositions (such as Wheatland, When Summer Comes, Place St. Henri and Hymn To Freedom) as well as a selection of beloved jazz standards that are largely associated with OP’s career. Giving a rare glimpse behind the curtain of Peterson’s near seven-decade career, Oscar Peterson: Family Album will touch on career highlights, stories from the road, living and working as a Black Canadian around the world, the health challenges that nearly ended his career a decade early and the new outlook on life and music that followed. Mementos from the Peterson archives will be on display before and after the concerts, and select photos will be on display to enhance the intimacy of this debut presentation.

Many Canadians recognize Oscar Peterson’s name without knowing details about his life in music. His upcoming centennial anniversary is the perfect opportunity to cast a spotlight on both and trace a timeline of musical development so that audiences can fully understand the mastery, musicality, and legacy of this Canadian icon.
