To commemorate the occasion of world-renowned jazz pianist, composer, and educator Dr. Oscar Peterson's 100th birthday, more than twenty acclaimed musicians from across his beloved home country of Canada will come together on one of the world's most historic stages, Toronto's Massey Hall on June 14, 2025, for an electrifying one-night-only concert. Oscar Peterson at 100: A Canadian Celebration will feature music from throughout Peterson's near seven-decade career, with a mix of both his original compositions and jazz standards, performed with love by an eclectic mix of artists, all of whom have drawn inspiration from Peterson's immeasurable legacy.

The evening, co-produced by Céline Peterson and JUNO Award-winning drummer, composer, educator, and this evening's Musical Director, Jim Doxas, was born from the pair's desire to curate an evening that embodied the excellence that Peterson upheld throughout his life. All this showcases the scope of Peterson's legacy through the multigenerational talent that contributes immeasurably to both Canada's arts and culture and the ever-evolving jazz culture itself. Says Doxas: "Oscar Peterson's musical impact on Canadian culture is immeasurable. The opportunity to be actively involved in nurturing his legacy is not only a tremendous honour, but also a humbling responsibility. There is a palpable excitement among all of us who are coming together to celebrate him on this occasion, and on this historic Canadian stage. It is a dream and a privilege to be a part of preserving and honouring his legacy."
Contributing to the list of reasons why this "one-night-only" concert will be a must not just for Peterson fans but music lovers in general, is the addition of another very special piece of Oscar Peterson's personal and professional memorabilia. His beloved Bösendorfer Imperial piano, which has only been seen and heard outside of the family home on two previous occasions, will be on the Massey Hall Stage. This instrument encompasses so much of Peterson's life and carries its own unique story, which Céline promises she will share with audiences during the evening. As if this were not enough, there are some additional special guest performers and speakers who will also be taking the stage.
In reflecting on her personal inspiration for this specific concert, Céline Peterson says: "Something my dad once said that stayed with me since the first time I heard it is: "I always wanted to feel wanted at home, I've always wanted to feel respected at home, and I've always wanted to feel honoured at home." I can think of no greater way to honour him at home than to commemorate this occasion by celebrating the impact of his legacy and his humanity, than this concert, these artists - musicians he inspired. All of them are integral parts of our national community, playing his music as only they can, in their voices, on the Massey Hall Stage. Simply put, this is a dream. And, I am eternally grateful to each person who has come on board for this once in a lifetime event."
This concert promises to be a grand and unforgettable evening, honouring one of Canada's most cherished national treasures through music and storytelling. This is a night which will pay tribute not only to the legacy of Oscar Peterson, but to Canada's rich musical history and the voices of yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

Drums
Jim Doxas, a native Montréaler, was born into an artistically vibrant family, his father a classical guitarist, educator and recording engineer, and brother a saxophonist and composer. Before finding the drums, Jim played a number of other instruments: piano, violin, trumpet and French horn. Working alongside his father as a recording engineer was Jim’s first love. This all changed in his teens when he was “forced” to record acoustic drums for his father’s jingles... While studying at Montréal’s McGill University, Jim established himself early on as versatile percussionist. The pool of strong drummers and percussionists in the city heavily influenced him. During his time at McGill, Jim was honoured with Yamaha’s Rising Star Award in recognition of outstanding achievement as an instrumentalist. In addition, he was a featured artist at Carnegie Hall in a gala performance celebrating young North American talent. Throughout his undergraduate degree, Jim studied with renowned pedagogue and drummer, John Riley. Jim has been heavily influenced by rock, jazz, Motown and World Music. His work can be heard on over 150 albums and soundtracks, and he is a popular featured artist at jazz festivals worldwide. Distinguished for his improvisational approach to jazz, he makes the case that percussion can be as performative as a lyrical instrument. What distinguishes Doxas’ approach to improvisation is that he refuses to play it safe, allowing the moment to dictate the kind of framework that will contain, shape and guide the piece of music. He is astutely committed to the belief that significant music is always distinguished by what is left unsaid, the gaps of which inspire him to produce a highly original vocabulary of accents. During the last several years, Jim has been recognized by way of receiving Felix and Juno Awards, as well as nominations for Academy and Grammy Awards. He was also the drummer in the Oliver Jones Trio for over a decade. Doxas puts premium importance on music education by conducting masterclasses and teaching at various music academies around the world. His current projects include Riverside (in collaboration with Dave Douglas, Steve Swallow, and Chet Doxas), Jean-Michel Pilc trio and the Jim Doxas Trio. Jim is currently a lecturer and teacher at McGill University, while also balancing an active performance schedule.
